With the end of Texas’ duck season on the horizon we examine some tips for decoying those wary late season birds. This is prime time to harvest those fully plumed out, wallhanger drakes! This week, outdoor writer Will Brantley makes his return to the show as we break down his feature in Ducks Unlimited Magazine- “10 Tips for Late Season Ducks”.
By January, ducks have started to change their behavior and are pairing off. Selecting a mate for the upcoming migration back north and subsequent breeding season are front and center in their life cycle. You won’t want to miss Will’s tips on bringing those pairs and singles into shotgun range.
Next we are joined in studio by Fannin County whitetail hunter Jason Sluder for a whitetail tale for the ages. His 21 point bruiser is the biggest buck ever reported killed in Fannin County. Estimated to be 6 1/2 years old, the buck sported almost 50 inches in mass measurements, and scored 214 6/8 gross, 199 6/8 net. Jason with the buck of a lifetime:
During our visit, Jason talks about hunting this beast through bow season and on into the Texas general gun season. What kind of blind did he use? Did he harvest the deer coming to feed? We get all the details on this once in a lifetime monster! Jason even brought the rack over to the studio so we could put our hands on it! Too cool.
We wrap up the show by visiting with Dr. Megan Clayton- Assistant Professor and Extension Range Specialist for the Texas AgriLife Extension Center at Corpus Christi, TX. It’s no secret that cattle and wildlife (specifically whitetail deer) co-exist on many Texas ranches and deer leases. So today we discuss the value of introduced vs native pastures and the benefits of each for both cattle and wildlife.
