Hunting season is finally here! It’s the best weekend of the year and shotguns will be ringing out throughout much of Texas as the North and Central Zone dove openers are this weekend. So to start things off we talk mourning and whitewings with our Texas Parks and Wildlife Dove and Crane Program Leader Shaun Oldenburger. We discuss how precipitation affected this year’s population as well as invasive Eurasian Collared Doves and also TPWD’s dove banding program. Shaun even gives us a couple areas that he believes should be real hot spots.
Then a real treat when Texas Country artist and avid bow hunter Aaron Einhouse stops by the studio. Aaron is currently finishing up his 3rd studio album. We talk about the new record and hear about some of his musical influences such as the great Townes Van Zandt. We’ll hear some brand new music and hear about some of his recent bow hunts for New Zealand Red Stag and Alaskan black bear. I knew that we’d hit it off when he showed up with a six pack of Lone Star Light for us!
A dedicated bowhunter, Aaron recounts the story of his self guided Alaskan black bear hunt where things got a little hairy! At the end of the day, however, he had this huge boar to show for his efforts.
We round out the show by visiting with Jim Shulin of Texas’ Temple Fork Outfitters. TFO has long made some of the world’s finest fly fishing rod and reels but over the past 4 years, they’ve also been producing some incredible conventional rods as well. This week we specifically discuss what goes into making a rod designed to fight tough inshore saltwater species like redfish and trout. While the guts of a saltwater rod are very similar to a traditional bass rod, there is much more that goes into the ideal rod for saltwater. Jim talks about the differences and why it’s important to have a strong backbone and light rod tip when choosing a good inshore rod. Bottom line is they’ve got to be tough to tangle with giant redfish like the one caught on a TFO rod below:
